Listen to the artist statement for The Night of the Violet Bridge
As an autistic person “Living Your Best Life” has a unique meaning to me - it isn’t about being caught up in the busyness of life, but finding calm, comfort, and moments where I can just be myself.
My photograph of the Tasman bridge lit up purple over the still Derwent River represents this feeling and connection.
The quiet strength of the illuminated bridge; its structure reflected in the glow of colour of the still water below…connects me to the peacefulness of a world that doesn’t demand anything from me. I can live my best life – moving through life in my own time and own way - being who I really am without hiding or masking my authentic self.
This photo was taken using long exposure – constantly zooming in/out with a 24-105mm lens. I love the result that this technique achieved – capturing the subject matter in an almost surreal way. The resultant light and colour streaks give a more creative, abstract and dramatic look to the photograph.
I have loved experimenting with long exposure zoom bursts as every shot you take can look different and it also help you improve your camera skills by practicing shutter speed, timing and control.
About the artist - Bailey Denman
I am Bailey Denman, and I was born on 1st May 2005. In 2007, I was diagnosed with Autism.
I became interested in photography when I was at high school. I graduated earlier this year with a Diploma of Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania and am now studying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in photography.
Photography allows me to express myself in ways that words often cannot and provides me with an outlet to share the unique way in which I see the world.
My hope is to pursue a career within the field of professional photography.
