Listen to the artist statement for Paint the Town Hall Red
For Lucah, living his best life means engaging with the world through joyful curiosity and expressing those experiences through his practice of vivid, colour-rich, pattern-driven artworks. Paint the Town Hall Red emerged from this way of seeing.
Originally visiting the town hall to view an exhibition, Lucah soon became captivated by the building itself. What appears to many as an ordinary Hobart landmark unfolded for him as a vibrant wonderland. He wandered its maze of stairs, pillars, and rooms like exploring a cave—revelling in details both grand and overlooked. Fire escapes, ventilation grates, elaborate door handles and even the back car park became sources of fascination, with only locked doors halting his path.
This painting reimagines the town hall through energetic colour and rhythmic pattern, reflecting not just the building’s forms but Lucah’s delight in discovering the extraordinary within the everyday. Through this work, he invites viewers to reconnect with their environments—finding joy, wonder, and renewed attention in the small details that shape the places around them.
