The Disability Inclusion Advisory Council is an advisory body established under the Disability Rights, Inclusion and Safeguarding Act 2024.
The Council will support the Minister for Disability Services and Commissioner on inclusion and access for Tasmanians with disability. Council members will be Tasmanians with diverse lived experiences of disability and people connected to the disability community, such as family members, supporters, carers, advocates, and community representatives.
What the Council will work on
The role of the Council is to:
- Provide consultation on the Tasmanian Disability Inclusion Plan - a roadmap for government action
- Assist defined entities to create their Disability Inclusion Action Plans
- Advise on policy - identify barriers and opportunities for systemic improvements
- Collaborate with other councils, sharing ideas nationally and locally
Council members
Council will consist of at least 9 members, with a maximum of 11 people appointed by the Minister on the recommendation of the Commissioner.
The Chairperson will be a person with disability, and a majority of members will be people with disability.
Members receive sitting and preparation fees. Travel, accommodation, and adjustments are also covered.
Meetings
Members will be expected to attend four meetings per year which may be in person or online, plus some tasks outside of meetings.
